Benilde’s Animation Program is a comprehensive animation course, where students will learn all the animation techniques, from experimental stop-motion animation, 2D animation to 3D CG animation. They will also learn the whole animation production process from pre-production up to the post-production stage. Aside from developing their skills, the course aims to develop them to conceptualize, design and tell stories. Original content creation is a major objective of the course. The Animation Program acts as a venue where students can experiment explore and enhance their creativity.
The guiding principle behind the Bachelor of Arts in Animation is the social constructivist theory of learning, specifically, situated cognition and cognitive apprenticeship. Situated cognition is a theory of instruction that suggests learning is naturally tied to authentic activity, context, and culture. The Program is dedicated in providing a nurturing environment for authentic learning. Simulating an animation studio inside the laboratory, not only increases students’ motivation to learn, but also speeds up their learning and skills development.
Similarly, cognitive apprenticeship supports learning by enabling students to enter the culture of practice in an authentic domain activity. And as apprenticeship suggest, students will experience the paradigm of situated modeling, coaching and fading. This will empower students to continue independently long after they learned from their mentors.
To realize this, the Program provides industry standard facilities that will give students ample animation studio experience inside the laboratory. The Program, also, recruits and encourages industry practitioners to share and teach their expertise. This will ensure that learnings will be authentic and true to the animation industry’s standard. The mentor and apprentice relationship that the program conforms to is consistent with the Learner-Centered educational philosophy of Benilde.
This subject guide gathers in one place carefully evaluated and selected resources on animation available and accessible at the CLR and its subscribed databases. Books (both print and electronic) are categorized per course; while journals, online databases, and industry report are recommended for the entire Animation program.

Physics for animators by
Achieving believable motion in animation requires an understanding of physics that most of us missed out on in art school. Although animators often break the laws of physics for comedic or dramatic effect, you need to know which laws you're breaking in order to make it work. And while large studios might be able to spend a lot of time and money testing different approaches or hiring a physics consultant, smaller studios and independent animators have no such luxury. This book takes the mystery out of physics tasks like character motion, light and shadow placement, explosions, ocean movement, and outer space scenes, making it easy to apply realistic physics to your work. Physics concepts are explained in animator's terms, relating concepts specifically to animation movement and appearance. Complex mathematical concepts are broken down into clear steps you can follow to solve animation problems quickly and effectively. Bonus companion website at www.physicsforanimators.com offers additional resources, including examples in movies and games, links to resources, and tips on using physics in your work. Uniting theory and practice, author Michele Bousquet teaches animators how to swiftly and efficiently create scientifically accurate scenes and fix problem spots, and how and when to break the laws of physics. Ideal for everything from classical 2D animation to advanced CG special effects, this book provides animators with solutions that are simple, quick, and powerful.

Autodesk Maya 2015 - 3D animation from concept to final by
Autodesk Maya is the professional program for 3D graphics and 3D animation. The software combines powerful tools for modeling, animation, simulation, visual effects and rendering. In this book, Alexander N. Ostermann shows you the possibilities of this special, but also very complex software in a very practical way using a detailed example.
It starts with the basics and first explains what is important when preparing a 3D project. After a basic introduction to the Maya user interface, step by step your own character from head to toe is modeled and textured in Maya, a corresponding animation rig is created and the skinning is carried out. A presentation of Maya's main animation tools is followed by the animation of the previously created character moving, speaking and showing emotions.
The use of particle systems (dynamics) and the different types of lighting are also explained. Finally, the book shows the different rendering methods as well as their respective advantages and disadvantages. The author explains all work steps with the help of many clear illustrations. He also mentions possible alternatives to his approach. This gives you the best overview of the extensive functions of Autodesk Maya and a perfect workflow in 3D animation!

American cinema of the 2010s : themes and variations by
"The 2010s were perhaps the most tumultuous decade since the 1960s. The effects of the Great Recession continued to be felt. The administration of Barack Obama, the first African-American president, encouraged many to think that America was now "post-racial," an illusion broken by the election of Donald Trump. Polarization reigned, communicated on social media. Netflix and Amazon jumped into production. By 2019, Netflix produced more feature films than the traditional studios combined. Cinema's move from film to digital, in production and in exhibition, was complete by mid-decade. #MeToo and #Oscarssowhite signaled a reckoning with gross gender and racial inequalities in the media, matched by that in the wider culture. The essays of American Cinema of the 2010s explore the blockbusters, low-budget sleepers, and films in between. A decade seemingly dominated by the superhero movies of Marvel and DC also saw small horror films and critically praised independent films draw audiences and win awards. Animation continued to produce popular and ground-breaking works, while auteurs such as Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, and George Miller intersected with new voices such as Jordan Peele, Ryan Coogler, and Ari Aster to make the 2010s a memorable era for movies. Films discussed include Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy, Zero Dark Thirty, The Force Awakens, Get Out, Mad Max: Fury Road, American Sniper, Hereditary, and Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood"-- Provided by publisher

New media futures by
This book is intended for use in a large introductory class in new media in a program that covers the "full-stack" including critical/cultural studies, media management, diffusion of innovation, and synthetic media production. The first half of this basic sequence covered new media and democracy, finance, intellectual property law, basic games, and transmedia. The second half of the sequence covers many topics related to aesthetics, design, technology, and methodology. To that end, this book needed to be written so that it would be helpful for many different professors and trajectories of study. This book is in neither engineering, social science, nor the humanities, but also all of those. At the same time, this is a program in the Communication Studies and Media Studies traditions of the United States and that texture will come across
In the age of the internet, New Media has been more than just a platform for communication. This course will provide the student the necessary mindset in forming narratives for multiple platforms. They will learn to map the “hero’s journey” through short form, if not episodic content. This course also introduces the concept of Transmedia Storytelling by creating “universes” with their own set of values, mythology and milieu, and where stories are developed through animation, live action, photography, action-figure design (sculpture),etc.

Stop Motion Animation - Creative films with LEGO figures by
Stop motion animation is not only used in Hollywood films and cartoon series - anyone can create creative videos at home with simple equipment such as smartphones or cameras. LEGO® figures come to life: they play soccer, chat or recreate famous movie scenes. The results can be admired on Instagram or YouTube, for example, where many amateur filmmakers share their work with an active community. In this practical manual, Alexander Altendorfer shows you how to implement LEGO® films (brick films) yourself, from the idea to the publication. He lays the foundation with the cinematic basics of camera settings, image composition and frame rates. Then it starts!
Using many sample images, he explains the set structure and clearly shows how a finished film can be created from individual photos. Let your LEGO® characters run, jump, float and talk. Use tracking shots and effects and simulate running water or a flickering campfire.
The post-processing of the films is clearly explained for both Windows and Mac users using free programs. The author also gives you numerous suggestions for your own films so that you can start your stop-motion film straight away.
