Bentham and the arts by

Cinema, trance and cybernetics by
Multimedia experiments are everywhere in contemporary art, but the collaboration and conflict associated with multimedia is not a new phenomenon. From opera to the symphonic poem to paintings inspired by music, many attempts have been made to pair sounds with pictures and to combine the arts of time and space. Counterpoints explores this artistic evolution from ancient times to the present day. The book's main focus is music and its relationship with painting, sculpture, and architecture. Philippe Junod draws on theoretical and practical examples to show how different art movements throughout history have embraced or rejected creative combinations. He explains how the Renaissance, neoclassicism, and certain brands of modernism tried to claim the purity of each mode of expression, while other movements such as romanticism, symbolism, and surrealism called for a fusion of the arts. Counterpoints is a unique cultural history, one that provides a critical understanding of a popular but previously unheralded art form.

Candace Wheeler : the art and enterprise of American design, 1875-1900 by
"Candace Wheeler (American, 1827--1923) changed the course of textile and interior design in nineteenth-century America and was a driving force behind the professionalization of women in the design field. Inspired by the embroideries produced by England's Royal School of Art needlework, which she saw at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Wheeler founded the Society of Decorative Art in New York. The organization offered instruction in the applied arts to women and helped them sell their work, providing them some measure of economic independence. Artistically, Wheeler had begun by taking as her model the accomplishments of advanced British designers such as William Morris and Walter Crane. In the course of her career she absorbed elements of Japanese design and developed a sophisticated American textile style in which the natural forms of native plants were interpreted as free-flowing designs. To produce fabrics that were beautiful but also affordable and practical for use in middle-class homes, she explored unusual weaving and printing techniques, and in some cases invented new ones. This publication contains a biographical essay and a catalogue of about one hundred designs for textiles, wallpaper, and other interior furnishings by Wheeler and her associates."-- Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Southeast Asian Houses by
Annotation Nonfiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. Architecture. The modernization of traditional houses in each country may be understood as a process by which various aspects of culture and architecture originating from China, India, European colonial countries and international style were assimilated into various forms and elements of traditional houses. In contemporary houses recently developed in Southeast Asian cities, influences of more nearby regions such as South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore can easily be found. Even under such multicultural influences, Southeast Asian countries sought compromises and maintained each country's unique housing culture, resulting in the differentiation of each country's housing style. This book aims to find out the uniqueness of each Southeast Asian country's modern housing through the understanding of the modern housing typologies of each county produced by the process of modernization. Previous studies of Southeast Asia's urban housing were mostly on political, institutional, and economic issues, which can be said to be macro-issues. However, this book focuses on the forms of urban housing, which is rather a micro-issue, compared to previous studies.
Southeast Asian Houses : expanding tradition by
Southeast Asian architecture tends to be generalized under one umbrella due to the countries' common geographical, climatic, and historical context. However, Southeast Asian countries are dissimilar due to their ethnic and religious differences, which led to each country's own subtle characteristics in housing. In order to identify the commonality and diversity among Southeast Asian architecture, details of the architectural forms have to be carefully analyzed. This book begins with an introductory section about housing culture in Southeast Asia as a whole and then examines the traditional house.

Constructivist research method : understanding the resilience of a marginalized sampaguita growing community in the Philippines by
I conducted field immersions in 2008 to identify a PhD research problem. My in-depth interviews focused on the livelihood of sampaguita growers in the Philippines. My interactions and observations in the field revealed that resilience to livelihood risks is a salient social construction in the "life world" of sampaguita growers. I used a grounded theory method to understand the development processes of resilience from the perspective of the insiders in their natural setting. The studied life and research method emerged during the research process rather than being preconceived. The constructivist paradigm that underlies the grounded theory method of my research acknowledges that multiple perspectives about the studied phenomenon exist. This compelled me to make a commitment to rigorously gather data and reflexively interpret the conceptually dense lived experiences to produce a grounded theory on resilience development. In the course of the research, methodological and situational problems arose. In this case study, I expound the particular challenges in using emergent methods of data gathering, coding narrative data and theoretical sampling. There was complexity in making theoretical analysis that makes connections about the conditions, actions, interactions, and consequences of the resilience categories I constructed. The task of grounding the analytical connections in their temporal, cultural, structural, and environmental contexts required diligent scrutiny. Understanding the contextual differences in lived experiences of the marginalized sampaguita growing community was a crucial process in developing the grounded theory of resilience.

Isabel lópez-Quesada: at Home by
Innovatively combining period and contemporary furniture and art in a sophisticated mix, the homes of Isabel López- Quesada are inspirational and unforgettable. In At Home, the Spanish designer tells her own story. López-Quesada introduces her family and their traditions, and reveals her sources of inspiration - such as the work of earlier designers like Renzo Mongiardino and John Stefanidis. She relates how she transformed an abandoned wax factory in a leafy district of Madrid into her family home and atelier, and then recounts how she created a country home out of a run-down Basque farm in the hills outside of Biarritz, France. Both the Madrid and Biarritz properties have been affectionately documented by Miguel Flores-Vianna, who has photographed interiors, patios, and gardens, as well as López-Quesada's design studios.

Daylight is the most important element determining the mood and appearance of architecture, more so than all construction materials. In office buildings in particular, the good provision of daylight and matching artificial lighting installations make an important contribution to energy conservation - the better the use made of daylight, the less energy has to be consumed for artificial lighting. For this reason, typical architectural concepts have changed in recent years; enclosed buildings with full air-conditioning have increasingly made way to buildings that respond to the climate conditions of their environment, thereby using only a much reduced amount of energy without compromising on comfort. The BASICS Lighting Design volume includes the most important principles of daylight and artificial lighting design. Selection of subjects covered: Sizes and units Building concept design principles (layout design, building orientation and facade structure) Lighting design concepts Current daylighting and artificial lighting systems Solar screening Directing daylight

From darkness to light : writers in museums 1798-1898 by
"From Darkness to Light explores from a variety of angles the subject of museum lighting in exhibition spaces in America, Japan, and Western Europe throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Written by an array of international experts, these collected essays gather perspectives from a diverse range of cultural sensibilities. From sensitive discussions of Tintoretto's unique approach to the play of light and darkness as exhibited in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, to the development of museum lighting as part of Japanese artistic self-fashioning, via the story of an epic American painting on tour, museum illumination in the work of Henry James, and lighting alterations at Chatsworth (to name only a few topics) this book is a treasure trove of illuminating contributions. The collection is at once a refreshing insight for the enthusiastic museum-goer, who is brought to an awareness of the exhibit in its immediate environment, and a wide-ranging scholarly compendium for the professional who seeks to proceed in their academic or curatorial work with a more enlightened sense of the lighted space."--Publisher's website

Period rooms in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by
Superb examples of interior design through the ages are on view in the period rooms at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. From an ancient Roman bedroom excavated near Pompeii to a Louis XVI grand salon from eighteenth-century Paris to the Frank Lloyd Wright Room in the American Wing, these popular exhibition galleries can now be seen for the first time in book form. Thirty-four spectacular installations - some actual rooms taken from historic buildings and some.
Recreations intended to show related works of decorative art in an authentic setting - offer a beautifully photographed grand tour through the history of interiors. From a twelfth-century cloister from the Pyrenees to eighteenth-century French and English parlors and boudoirs to Colonial and early nineteenth-century American dining rooms and libraries, the Metropolitan's collection of period rooms offers a wealth of fine furniture and decorative elements. An introduction.
By Museum director Philippe de Montebello explains the concept of period rooms at the Museum and how they have been developed, installed, and furnished over the past hundred years. Then, each room is depicted both in color photographs taken especially for this book and in lively narrative descriptions that include fascinating information about the original room from which the Museum's example is derived, the individuals who commissioned and carried out the decoration,
And the era that the room represents. Supplementing the stunning photographs of the rooms are historical photographs and engravings and close-up shots of selected ornaments and pieces of furniture, enabling the reader to see details that are often inaccessible to Museum visitors.

Sustainability in Interior Design by
The environmental impact of interior architecture and design practice is immense, and this book highlights the need for designers to adapt the way they work and relearn the lessons lost in order to make their designs fully sustainable.
Contrary to many preconceptions, sustainable design can be sophisticated and stylish. By its nature, a sustainable approach means considering the whole life cycle of a project, thereby improving the functionality, quality, and human enjoyment and, in the long term, bringing real social and economic benefits. This book is filled with examples and techniques, together with historical and contemporary case studies, all supported by invaluable resources and links.
A comprehensive reference book for anyone wanting to work in interior design, this book introduces ideas of sustainability while encouraging and inspiring readers with positive, creative, and practical alternatives.

Composition, non-composition : architecture and theory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by
In architecture, "composition "refers to the conception of a building according to principles of regularity and hierarchy, or according to the principles of obtaining equilibrium. However, it is not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that the notion of composition becomes truly associated with architectural conception, notably under the influence of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand and his statement on the "Marche a suivre dans la composition d un project quelconque" [Procedure to be followed in the composition of any project]. The concept quickly erodes during the twentieth century, with the adoption of neutral architectural devices, the use of aggregative processes, and the adoption of "objective" operations, all of which can be understood as an attempt to move beyond compositional principles. In "Composition, Non-Composition," Jacques Lucan invites his readers to consider this novel historical perspective of architectural theory. The author describes the interaction of ideas that often clash with one another, with some that fade away as others emerge, thus offering invaluable keys to understanding contemporary architecture. Although this book is primarily addressed to students of architecture, it will also appeal to architects, historians of architecture, as well as to the interested public."

Don't get a job ... make a job : how to make it as a creative graduate by
"Too often a design or architecture degree is seen as a means to an end (a job in an established practice). But imagine for one moment that there are no employers, no firms to send your resumé to, no interviews to be had--what would you do? How would you forge your own path after graduation? The current economic climate has seen many graduates chasing a finite number of positions. The most ingenious and driven designers have found weird and wonderful ways of making opportunities for themselves, often by applying their skills across the creative disciplines of art, design, architecture, and interiors. Knowing what you want from your design career and being able to adapt your strategy to suit is basic and vital--just like in the wild, designers need to evolve. The book celebrates the various strategies that students and graduates are taking to gain exposure, while also including interviews and inspirational advice from those who are now enjoying success as a result of their creative approach to employment."-- Provided by publisher.
Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research by
"In this new edition of Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research, Caroline Whitbeck examines more scenarios of significant ethical problems in the engineering field"-- Provided by publisher.
"The first edition of Caroline Whitbeck's Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research focused on the difficult ethical problems engineers encounter in their practice and in research. In many ways, these problems are like design problems: they are complex, often ill defined; resolving them involves an iterative process of analysis and synthesis; and there can be more than one acceptable solution. In the second edition of this text, Dr. Whitbeck goes above and beyond by featuring more real-life problems, stating recent scenarios, and laying the foundation of ethical concepts and reasoning. This book offers a real-world, problem-centered approach to engineering ethics, using a rich collection of open-ended case studies to develop skill in recognizing and addressing ethical issues"-- Provided by publisher.

Advanced Methods and New Materials for Cultural Heritage Preservation by
The integration of science with art is a complex process of analysis and the knowledge and understanding of the need to save and protect works of art as well as preserve and restore cultural heritage. This is generally provoked by the living necessity, profoundly human, to leave our inheritance to new generations, as intact as is possible, the testimonies of the past. The issues approached interfere with artistic criticism, for example, biological and physico-chemical analyses, and intelligent mathematical modeling systems such as Marker-less Augmented Reality, 3D Reconstruction, intelligent combinations of digital image analysis functions to recognize and estimate the possible evolution of color and shape to help experts make the best decisions about authenticating and preserving-restoring art objects.Advanced technical devices such as digital databases and other tools and materials can allow for the eradication of offenses such as false art and falsification.
Conflict and Cultural Heritage: A Moral Analysis of the Challenges of Heritage Protection by
n the third issue of the J. Paul Getty Trust Occasional Papers in Cultural Heritage Policy series, authors Helen Frowe and Derek Matravers pivot from the earlier tone of the series in discussing the appropriate response to attacks on cultural heritage with their paper, “Conflict and Cultural Heritage: A Moral Analysis of the Challenges of Heritage Protection.” While Frowe and Matravers acknowledge the importance of cultural heritage, they assert that we must more carefully consider the complex moral dimensions—the inevitable serious consequences to human beings—before formulating policy to forcefully protect it.
A number of writers and thinkers working on the problem of preserving the world’s most treasured monuments, sites, and objects today cite what Frowe and Matravers call extrinsic and intrinsic justifications for the protection of cultural heritage. These are arguments that maintain that protecting heritage will be a key means to achieve other important goals, like the prevention of genocide, or arguments that heritage deserves to be forcefully protected for its own sake. Frowe and Matravers deconstruct both types of justifications, demonstrating a lack of clear evidence for a causal relationship between the destruction of cultural heritage and atrocities like genocide and arguing that the defense of heritage must not be treated with the same weight or urgency, or according to the same international policies, as the defense of human lives.
By calling for expanded theory and empirical data and the consideration of morality in the crafting of international policy vis-à-vis cultural heritage protection, Frowe and Matravers present a thoughtful critique that enriches this important series and adds to the ongoing dialogue in the field.

Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Resources Threatened by Climate Change by
With its wide spectrum of data, case studies, monitoring, and experimental and numerical simulation techniques, the multidisciplinary approach of material, environmental, and computer science applied to the conservation of cultural heritage offers several opportunities for the heritage science and conservation community to map and monitor state-of-the-art knowledge on natural and human-induced climate change impacts on cultural heritage--mainly constituted by the built environment--in Europe and Latin America. Geosciences' Special Issue titled "Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Resources Threatened by Climate Change" was launched to take stock of the existing but still fragmentary knowledge on this challenge, and to enable the community to respond to the implementation of the Paris agreement. These 10 papers exploit a broad range of data derived from preventive conservation monitoring conducted indoors in museums, churches, historical buildings, or outdoors in archeological sites and city centers. Case studies presented in the papers focus on a well-assorted sample of decay phenomena occurring on heritage materials (e.g., surface recession and biomass accumulation on limestone, depositions of pollutant on marble, salt weathering on inorganic building materials, and weathering processes on mortars in many local- to regional-scale study areas in the Scandinavian Peninsula, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, and Panama). Besides monitoring, the methodological approaches showcased include, but are not limited to, original material characterization, decay product characterization, and climate and numerical modelling on material components for assessing environmental impact and climate change effects.

Heritage Futures: Comparative Approaches to Natural and Cultural Heritage Practices by
Preservation of natural and cultural heritage is often said to be something that is done for the future, or on behalf of future generations, but the precise relationship of such practices to the future is rarely reflected upon. Heritage Futures draws on research undertaken over four years by an interdisciplinary, international team of sixteen researchers and more than twenty-five partner organizations to explore the role of heritage and heritage-like practices in building future worlds. Engaging broad themes such as diversity, transformation, profusion and uncertainty, Heritage Futures aims to understand how a range of conservation and preservation practices across a number of countries assemble and resource different kinds of futures, and the possibilities that emerge from such collaborative research for alternative approaches to heritage in the Anthropocene. Case studies include the cryopreservation of endangered DNA in frozen zoos, nuclear waste management, seed biobanking, landscape rewilding, social history collecting, space messaging, endangered language documentation, built and natural heritage management, household keeping and discarding practices, and world heritage site management.
